Mestre Mateo Awards

GALICIAN AUDIOVISUAL ACADEMY

The Mestre Mateo are the Galician TV and Cinema Awards. During the last 30 years, the Galician entertainment industry has developed a huge growth in both turnover and quality. The TV series are competing for the best European TV Series Awards. For instance, the Galician TV series Luci, has just been bought by an US Channel to be adapted. The best Spanish actors at the moment, Luis Tosar (3 Goya Awards) and Javier Gutierrez (2015 Best Actor Goya Award) are from Galicia.

This also applies to the movies... Mar adentro (The Sea Inside) Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winner in 2004, directed by Alejandro Amenabar and performed by Javier Bardem was entirely filmed in Galicia. Also Los Lunes al Sol (Mondays in the Sun), again with Luis Tosar and Javier Bardem, was filmed in Vigo, Galicia. One of the latest blockbusters in Spain was Celda 211 (Cell 211), Galician production winner of 10 Mestre Mateo Awards and 8 Goya statuettes. Also The Way (2010), directed, produced and written by Emilio Estevez, starring his father Martin Sheen, in honour of the Camino de Santiago. Pedro Almodovar´s last film "Julieta" was entirely shot in Galicia...and so on...

From the most sharpened cliffs to the greenest valleys; from the mountains to the best beaches as Rodas; the most ancient cathedral in Europe; the most western point of the European continent, Finisterre, which was considered the end of the earth until the discovery of America. Finisterre is located over one of the most dangerous shipping channels of the world called "Cost of death"  full of shipwrecks and legends ...You can find these and much more in Galicia region, therefore in Galician Cinema and by the way...in Galician language.
